A Different Kind of Clientele

For
Salasaca, Ecuador
Description

A 2007 Kellogg Institute for International Studies Internship Award offered me an exciting challenge through FSD Ecuador: to live, work, and design with the indigenous community of Salasaca for one summer, promoting the dream of a more collective '‘turismo comunitario’' movement. One Salasacan family’s guest house has begun to capitalize on its most unique asset – culture – and others hope to join the unconventional tourism initiative. I advised methods of house renovations and new constructions to fuse the simple, graceful Andean vernacular with modern functionality and attract the adventuresome alternative tourist.
